Birds in Sky and Fish at Sea, The Lord God Made Them For You And For Me

And God said, “Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.” So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day.
— Genesis 1:20-23

It has already become apparent in the previous days of creation that God’s power and intentionality are bearing out, and the same is true for the fifth day. Swimming fish and flying birds inhabit and enliven the structure God has created. It is yet another layer of intricacy within the unimaginable reality of God creating. And yet again, the intricacy level rises when we begin to see the “long game” of God. These creations are at God’s command, and God reveals his unfailing desire to bring and keep his people with him. It seems absurd until seen, but God reveals this unfailing love to his people through birds and fish.

And the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
— Jonah 1:17
For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
— Matthew 12:40
Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?
— Matthew 6:26

Birds in sky and fish at sea, the Lord God made them for you and for me.
