The Proof Is In The Process

Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”
— Genesis 2:18

In a perfect creation, can there be anything bad? Sin has not yet entered the world. Death and suffering and pain do not exist. And yet God makes a startling declaration. It is not good that the man should be alone. This wholly good creation has something not good in it? How can this be, and what does this mean? It can only be if God intended it. And it means God must have desire to intentionally reveal himself through it.

In God’s perfect plan and from the beginning, God created in process. In other words, instead of saying let everything be, God said let light be, and so began the process of creation rather than the moment of creation. In process God reveals himself over and over as powerful and good, as majestic and masterful, as savior and sovereign.

Creation has a deeper purpose than simply existing. Creation reveals the Creator.

And so it is with the aloneness of the man—it is not good. God then reveals himself and his design: I will make him a helper fit for him. The revelation is not marriage nor gender, though these things are found here. The revelation is a relational God who is savior of his people. The revelation is Jesus Christ.

Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.
— Ephesians 5:25-27
This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.
— Ephesians 5:32
